Integration of long-distance air transport with rail transport networks, specially new HST lines, is a policy that is gaining increasing support both at EU and national levels. Initiatives to promote the creation of interconnection nodes, which foster new multimodal alternatives for passengers, are reflected in strategic transport masterplans of several countries. The existence of integrated airport/rail nodes would also facilitate easier and smoother transitions between long- and short-distance networks, since urban transport modes (metro stations, buses, taxi) may provide services simultaneously to both air and rail passengers. By reducing duplications of investment needs, a higher degree of integration between modes would save resources for national/regional/local governments.
